KNUST’s newly launched Act, 2025 (Act 1157) has significantly expanded and reconstituted the University Council, introducing broader stakeholder representation and stronger governance safeguards.
The new Council structure incorporates representatives from industry, alumni, professional and non-professional staff, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Act also mandates gender consideration in presidential nominations, requiring that at least one nominee be a woman.
Professor John Tia Bugri, Chair of the Committee on the Act, said the restructured Council is designed to improve decision-making and ensure that University business is conducted more effectively.
In addition, the Act introduces clearer rules on tenure, vacancies, conflicts of interest and meetings, including mandatory declaration of interests by Council members, with sanctions for non-compliance.
Council Chairman, Akyamfour Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu, described the reforms as a defining milestone that provides clarity in roles and strengthens institutional stability.
